Across the world, city planners are rediscovering an old idea: trees make urban life better. From Milan to Singapore, dense plantings of native species are being woven into neighborhoods that were once dominated by concrete and asphalt.
The benefits are well documented. Urban forests lower summer temperatures by several degrees, absorb stormwater that would otherwise flood streets, and filter the fine particles that make city air harmful to breathe.
The Miyawaki Method
One approach gaining popularity is the Miyawaki method, which packs dozens of native species into small plots. These miniature forests grow up to ten times faster than conventional plantings and become self-sustaining within a few years, requiring no watering or weeding.
Community involvement is central to these projects. Residents help select species, plant saplings, and monitor growth, which builds a sense of ownership that protects the forest for decades.
The lesson is simple: green infrastructure is not a luxury. It is one of the cheapest and most effective tools cities have for adapting to a warming climate.
